Bush.KUSI contributor and AM 760 KFMB radio host Mark Larson was close with President Ronald Regan and through him learned a lot about President Bush.Larson says President Bush was one of the great last WWII generation presidents and although he was a north eastern republican, and Reagan was the robust Californian republican, getting together won them the ticket.President Ronald Reagan visited San Diego in 1988 the day before the election, at an event Larson co-emceed at, on behalf of George Bush. As most president’s don’t do that the day before the election, the 40th president said San Diego was his good luck city and he always came before a Reagan election.Larson remembers when Bush visited the All-Star game in 92′ with Ted Williams and although Bush wasn’t re-elected, Larson believes he’s a great model for a president. Actor Jussie Smollett indicted on 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct

It elaborates on the allegation that he falsely reported that he was attacked on Jan. 28 by two masked men who hurled racial and homophobic slurs at the black and openly gay actor, beat him, threw an unidentified liquid chemical on him and looped a rope tied like a noose around his neck. The indictment — eight counts from what he told the officer who responded to the report of the attack and eight for what he later told a detective — comes a little more than two weeks after prosecutors announced one felony count of the same charge.Chicago police initially investigated the incident as a possible hate crime but later said Smollett staged the attack, recruiting two brothers to carry it out, because he was unhappy with his pay on the Fox show.Indictments like the one revealed Friday are common in criminal cases. It was widely expected, said Mark Geragos, a prominent attorney representing Smollett.“The way the process operates is they have to do a probable cause proceeding, so this is what’s called a probable cause proceeding.I never thought they would do a preliminary hearing,” Geragos told NBC’s “Access” after the indictment was reported.Smollett, who was released on bail from jail the day after he was charged on Feb. 20, is scheduled to appear in court next week. He has denied the allegations. While it was not immediately clear why the grand jury indicted Smollett on 16 counts, it divides what prosecutors and police say the actor told the officer who responded to the initial call from what he said to the detective. The second eight counts are more explosive because they include two things that helped propel the incident into an international sensation. The first is that by the time he talked to the detective, Smollett said he could see through the eye holes of one attacker’s mask that he was a white man. The two brothers who allegedly participated are black.“He took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career,” Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, who is black, told reporters the day Smollett was initially charged. Johnson said Smollett paid the two brothers $3,500 to carry out the staged attack. The second eight counts also include the allegation that Smollett told the detective one of the attackers looped a rope around his neck — a detail that both Johnson and the judge who set Smollett’s bond said was a particularly offensive use of a symbol of the ugly history of black lynchings in the United States. The indictment, written in the dry legal language, does not include new details. It says that Smollett knew at the time he relayed his account that he had “no reasonable ground that such an offense had been committed.”Since Smollett’s arrest, the producers of “Empire” announced that the actor’s character would be removed from the season’s final two episodes. Allinone home security systems should be more popular

first_img Security Cameras Security Aug 31 • Alexa can tell you if someone breaks into your house 54 Photos How to buy the right security camera for you Review • The plucky Piper NV security system plays for keeps • Comments CNET Smart Home 8 Amazon LG 53 indoor security cameras for a safer smart home A too-small poolSo what’s going on here? Are companies holding off on manufacturing more all-in-one systems because people aren’t really buying the ones that are already out there? Or are people simply not buying the ones already out there because the available offerings largely underperform?I think it’s both. Forrester research firm VP and principal analyst, Frank Gillett, is also surprised they aren’t more popular. “I hold them up as an example of something that I thought would take off more,” he says.He thinks it’s because they’re being sold as “security cameras” rather than “smart camera systems.”  Now playing: Watch this: Aug 30 • Battling bot vacs: iRobot Roomba S9+ vs Neato Botvac D7 Connected Enlarge ImageThe Abode Iota is one of the only remaining all-in-one security systems I like, but the category has so much potential. Tyler Lizenby/CNET The all-in-one security system is a self-contained home monitoring gadget. What does that mean, you ask? Fair question. It means you get all of the basics of a DIY security system in a single, compact device.  From the now-defunct Piper Classic and Piper NV to the still-available Guardzilla 360 and Abode Iota, all-in-one security systems come complete with built-in cameras, sirens, motion sensors and other useful features. Arm and disarm yours in the accompanying app just like you would with any other security system and let it watch over your house for you. Their main benefits, of course, are flexibility and portability. They’re ideal for smaller homes with one main point of entry to keep an eye on. They’re also fantastic for folks living in apartments or any rented spaces where you aren’t supposed to install a bunch of stuff, lest you face the wrath of an irate landlord — or lady.  And if you decide to move, simply unplug your handy all-in-one device and pack it alongside your other small electronics for use at your next place. But, surprisingly (to me, at least), this category of home security products hasn’t caught on much. There are less than ten main options kicking around today from names like Canary, LG, Somfy and a handful of others. And, like I said, my original favorites in the category, the Piper Classic and NV devices, are discontinued.  So, what’s the deal with these all-in-one systems and why aren’t more people making (and buying) them? Smart security overview: The best home security devices of 2019PiperEnlarge ImageThe Piper Classic is gone and I’m sad about it. Colin West McDonald/CNET A tale of two Pipers The $199 Piper Classic was a security module with a camera, a siren and a whole bunch of sensors that detected everything from ambient light to motion. You could track what’s going on via the HD live video stream and get alerts during a potential break-in. The Piper stored up to 1,000 video clips on its cloud server for free — there was no local storage option, but there wasn’t a monthly fee either. It had a built-in Z-Wave hub for connecting third-party devices and compatibility with IFTTT, the free “if this, then that” automation service.  The $279 Piper NV (“NV” stands for “night vision” and “new version”) distinguished itself from its similar-looking Piper predecessor in a couple of key ways. With night vision and a 3.4-megapixel camera sensor, the NV was a clear upgrade from the 2-megapixel sans-night-vision original. It retained a lot of the features that made the first iteration so great — a 180-degree fish-eye lens, a 105-decibel siren, a microphone and a speaker, free cloud storage and multiple sensors — but the new add-ons took the NV to a new level. Then, Alarm.com bought Piper parent company Icontrol Networks in early 2017 and the Pipers basically disappeared. I continued to spot them, for a time, on third-party sites like Amazon, but the Alarm.com purchase was a death sentence for the two Piper all-in-one systems. Womp, womp. Piper nvEnlarge ImageThe next-gen Piper NV is also gone…and I’m also sad about it. Tyler Lizenby/CNET The restHere are the all-in-one systems that are still hanging on despite a lack of movement in the category over the past five or six years:Abode IotaCanary All-in-OneCanary ViewGuardzilla 360LG Smart SecuritySens8Somfy OneThat’s it, just seven products… including the UK-based Somfy One that isn’t sold in the United States. Read more about each specific device in more detail here, but the overall gist is that they’re largely disappointing with a couple of exceptions.Canary’s All-in-One had performance issues and the View was missing key features like a siren. Guardzilla’s 360 and the LG Smart Security were too glitchy, and the Sens8 doesn’t work with Alexa or Google Assistant (at least Alexa or Google Assistant compatibility is pretty much a minimum requirement at this point), although I haven’t tested it fully yet, so it could be great otherwise. The Abode Iota is the one that stands out slightly from the rest of the models I’ve tested. For $249, you get the device itself, one door/window sensor and a key fob. While you don’t need those extra accessories, it makes the Iota’s starter kit more scalable. The Iota performs well too and offers extras like two-hour battery backup in the event of a power outage and optional local storage via a built-in microSD card slot. It also works with both Alexa and Google Assistant. Icontrol Networks Piper NV Aug 31 • Best smart light bulbs for 2019 (plus switches, light strips, accessories and more) Aug 31 • The best coffee grinders you can buy right now CNET Smart Home Share your voice See All 4:11 reading • All-in-one home security systems should be much more popular Related links “Selling fear doesn’t take you very far,” Gillett adds. Smart camera systems, or what I call all-in-one systems, have extra features customers, particularly renters and families, should want — environmental sensors and other lifestyle features. But the companies making them haven’t figured out the right “story or the right value proposition” to sell them effectively, Gillett explains. But all this means there’s an excellent opportunity for new companies to swoop in and save this waffling home security category. All-in-one home security devices have the potential to appeal broadly to renters, who often can’t use professional firms like ADT, AT&T Digital Life or Comcast Xfinity Home with their install-intensive hardware that’s much more difficult to move when your lease is up. And, as Gillett points out, there’s also a great opening for these cameras to be more than home security monitoring devices, but family devices that can be used to see if the kids got home from school, to monitor the temperature in the baby’s room and so much more.Someone needs to pick up where Piper left off and give the Abode Iota some much-needed competition.  7 all-in-one home security systems to watch your place 24/7 Abode Iota all-in-one camera works with Siri, Z-Wave and Zigbee August View vs. Ring Video Doorbell 2 Tagslast_img read more

Subhash Chandras personal guarantee saves Zee from default

first_imgZee Entertainment’s creditors hope that a personal guarantee that they have obtained from group chairman Subhash Chandra will ensure the smooth implementation of a share sale programme to recover the dues. The lenders sought Subhash Chandra’s “irrevocable and unconditional” personal guarantee after a hard bargain to prevent the media company’s default, according to media reports.Reports about the deal buoyed Zee shares on the stock market on Tuesday, February 5. On National Stock Exchange (NSE), the share of Zee Entertainment that opened at Rs 343 rose by Rs 16.90 or 4.86 percent to close at Rs 365.35. The share has come off its 52-week low of Rs 288.30 that it hit on January 25.The agreement gives a committee of lenders (CoL) more powers and greater control over the developments in the company as the Zee group owes Rs 13,500 crore to the lenders. The debt is secured by the shares of listed firms including Zee Entertainment and Dish TV.A Zee statement said: “As communicated through our official statement issued on February 3, the lenders have agreed that there will not be any event of default declared, due to the movement in the stock price of Essel Group’s listed corporate entities, giving Essel Group the required level of time to complete the strategic sale process of its key assets without any compromise on the value. Any additional terms pertaining to the agreement cannot be shared since we are bound by a confidentiality agreement.”The agreement prevents Zee from offloading the pledged shares despite a huge slide in the prices of the securities towards the end of last month. The agreement terms give the lenders a greater say, upside benefit from the proposed strategic sale, more cover and personal guarantee, a report in the Business Standard says. The stock market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has been informed of the deal by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) that represents the country’s mutual fund industry.Mutual fund companies like Aditya Birla Sun Life, HDFC, Franklin Templeton, and ICICI Prudential are the major lenders of Zee.Sebi has instructed the creditors to ensure that the interests of the investors in the mutual funds are kept in mind.A sharp drop in Zee group shares on January 25 had put the lenders in a spot.”Invoking and liquidation of pledged shares would have caused the shares to tumble further. At the same time, holding on to the shares would have raised the risk of default. The formal agreement with Zee gives us more control. We are hopeful that they will be able to conduct a strategic sale at fair value,” a report quotes a mutual fund official as saying.Zee will have to enter into a definitive agreement for the proposed sale before July 31 and completed the transaction before September 30. Zee will set up an escrow account for the transaction which the lenders will oversee to ensure the sale proceeds are properly utilized.last_img read more
